West Bengal Housing Board.... a hope for shelter
West Bengal Housing Board was established under Act.XXXII of 1972 with a mission to provide shelter for the people of West Bengal at a reasonable as well as an affordable price.
Since functioning from 5th May.1973, the West Bengal Housing Board by its professional efficiency & acumen earned faith both in respect of quality of construction and affordability among the people of State.
West Bengal Housing Board, being pioneer in Housing sector, has been constructing dwelling units for more than three decades for different categories of people of the state to meet the increasing demands of dwelling units at a reasonable price.
The West Bengal Housing Board has constructed dwelling units on the following mix-up as on 31.03.2012.

To develop the basic quality of life style for the lower & middle income group the need of planned housing is one of the most important factor. Accordingly, in order to upheld the quality of life, West Bengal Housing Board is working continuously in the Housing Sector, whenever any problem faced by the Govt. in regard to provide shelter either to the cyclone affected people or otherwise, West Bengal Government initiated the scheme and passed the responsibility of providing shelter to Housing Board to solve the issue.
In the said context, West Bengal Housing Board sanctioned loan to 20,000 cyclone affected people in North and South 24 Parganas in 1989-90 @Rs.6000/- each with the loan assistance from HUDCO.
Board at the direction of Govt. of West Bengal provided all possible infrastructural facilities for formation of New Town Rajarhat Project at its initial stage by providing land on behalf of HIDCO, deputing Technical personnel to carry out initial work.
West Bengal Housing Board completed about 81 Housing Projects till today in Kolkata and in different district in West Bengal. Some of the projects have become land mark of the city, like Golf Green Urban Complex, Karunamoyee, Purbachal, Labony, Purbsha, Sudakshina, Uttarayan, Kalindi, Indrolok, Sunny Park, Calcutta Green and Himalaya Kannya etc.
It is important to note that the Board increased its activities in different districts in West Bengal. Recently schemes have been taken up in Industrial area in Asansol, Durgapur, Siliguri etc. Projects in Farakka in Murshidibad is in the pipeline.
However, due to legal and various formalities in Land Acquisition process & dirth of good land in KMDA area, adequate number of projects as contemplated could not be taken up.
